Use cases: General web applications, file servers, development/test environments
Flash
SSD-backed high-performance tier.
- Media: SSD
- IOPS: 100-16,000 (Variable by size)
- IOPS Burst: 3,000 (Only applies when base IOPS is 3,000 or below)
- Throughput:
- Base: 10GB, 100 IOPS, 150MB/s
- After 10GB: 8 IOPS per 1GB increase (max 16,000 IOPS)
- After 100GB: 2MB/s per 1GB increase (max 350MB/s)
Use cases: Database servers, high-performance applications, real-time processing systems
Express
SSD-backed top tier and the default for OS disks.
- Media: SSD
- IOPS: 4,000-32,000 (Variable by size)
- IOPS Burst: None
- Throughput:
- Base: 100GB, 4,000 IOPS, 200MB/s
- After 100GB: 16 IOPS per 1GB increase (max 32,000 IOPS)
- After 100GB: 4MB/s per 1GB increase (max 1,000MB/s)
Use cases: High-performance databases, real-time analytics systems, high-volume transaction processing
Performance calculation examples
Flash
100GB Flash storage
- IOPS: 100 + (90GB × 8 IOPS) = 820 IOPS
- Throughput: 150MB/s + (0GB × 2MB/s) = 150MB/s
500GB Flash storage
- IOPS: 100 + (490GB × 8 IOPS) = 4,020 IOPS
- Throughput: 150MB/s + (400GB × 2MB/s) = 950MB/s (limited to max 350MB/s)
Express
200GB Express storage
- IOPS: 4,000 + (100GB × 16 IOPS) = 5,600 IOPS
- Throughput: 200MB/s + (100GB × 4MB/s) = 600MB/s
Limitations
- Maximum storage count: Up to 20 additional storage volumes per project.
- Performance scaling: Each tier’s performance scales automatically with volume size.
Choosing a tier
- Archive: Cost-focused long-term retention
- Hybrid: General web applications and file servers
- Flash: Databases and applications that need mid-level performance
- Express: OS disks and high-performance databases that need maximum performance
